for years when I typed a URL into the address bar i was able to use "command return" to complete the URL with the .com suffix and Firefox would go to that url in the same tab. Now it opens a new tab and goes to the search engine with the text I entered as the URL. How can i get the old behavior?

You need to use Ctrl + Enter to canonize the URL and open the URL in the current tab. This is the default on all platforms including Mac, so you need to use the Control key and not the Command key.
