My bookmarks are all jumbled up. I'm not able to change the profile as it's a work computer. How do I get them back to the way they were?

Something updated on Firefox while I was away from my desk at work. Now all my bookmarks are jumbled up. I am not allowed to reset the profile on the work computer. I did move bookmarks to 'work' and 'personal' folders, but the folders aren't there when I go to Library. I can't be clicking all over te place all day to get to work-related bookmarks. I just want ALL of my bookmarks to show when I click on the Library and I want them in the order I put them in manually. Is there a way to do this?

Hi Gert, sorry to hear about this problem. Do you use Sync to synchronize bookmarks with any other installations of Firefox?

Before spending further time, have you considered rolling back your bookmarks to a recent backup? The "Restore" menu has your back there: Restore bookmarks from backup or move them to another computer. Each date should also list the number of items (bookmarks + folders together).

When you launch the Library window (Ctrl+Shift+b), the default view is Other, which usually looks unfamiliar. Select the relevant "container" in the left column: toolbar, menu, or other.

Finally, I'll mention that if you prefer a different default folder besides Other, there is an add-on for that: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/default-bookmark-folder/

Hope that helps. Let us know.

You can add the "Bookmarks Menu" button that shows the bookmarks in a drop-down list to the Navigation Toolbar via these steps:

  • click the bookshelf 57 library icon icon on the Navigation Toolbar or alternatively use the Library menu in the "3-bar" Firefox menu button New Fx Menu drop-down list
  • click Bookmarks
  • click "Bookmarking Tools", then click "Add Bookmarks Menu to Toolbar"
The Bookmark Menu button Bookmark Menu icon (star on tray) should appear on the Navigation Toolbar.

You can also drag the Bookmarks Menu button from the Customize palette to the Navigation Toolbar

See also "How do I add the Bookmarks Menu button to the toolbar?":

You can try to restore an older compressed .jsonlz4 backup in the bookmarkbackups folder.

  • Bookmarks -> Show All Bookmarks -> Import & Backup -> Restore

The name of an automatically created JSON bookmarks backup in the bookmarkbackups folder includes a total item count (folders and separators included) and an hash value to prevent saving the same backup more than once. You also see this count in the Restore menu drop-down list.

  • bookmarks-YYYY-MM-DD_<item count>_<hash>.jsonlz4.

If you use Sync then best is to disconnect Sync temporarily during troubleshooting.

I am not computer savvy at all. I do not know what sync is, so I'm not using it. I just want my bookmarks back the way they were. I cannot go t restore since my work computer is regulated by our IT guys. I can't even tell it to not remember history. To get to my work bookmarks, I now have to click at least 6 times (counting mis-steps since I don't know what I"m doing). This sucks.

Maybe this screenshot will help.
