I've been evaluating Thunderbird after being a long time Outlook user. In Outlook, when SpamAssassin running on the email server tags an email as spam, it is delivered to the spam mailbox with the original email as an attachment. You can review the original email and detach it from the spam message, moving it to the correct folder if it is not spam. Of course if it is spam you can just delete the whole thing.

Using Thunderbird, these messages are showing up in the spam folder but there doesn't seem to be any intuitive way to detach the messages and move good messages to the correct folder. Is this possible in Thunderbird?

I suggest you try another approach, like marking the messages as spam instead of making them an attachment. You are trying to undo something that really should not have been done in the first place.
