cached web content and cookies & site data

The last time I cleared my cached web content and cookies & site data under preferences I lost all my passwords to sign into Firefox. Since then I am afraid to clear anything. I have 1 GB in my cached web content. What can I do to avoid this problem ?? I need to clear out my cache but I do not want to spend 2 hours on the phone with AT&T setting up new passwords. I am not too computer smart so I can use any expert help. Thanls.

Hi Hombart, is this problem on an iOS device (iPhone/iPad) or on your Mac?

On Mac:

On the Preferences page, Privacy & Security Panel, the "Clear Data" button pops up a little dialog with two separate checkboxes, each with a brief explanation:

  • Cookies and Site Data
You may get signed out of websites if cleared
  • Cached Web Content
Will require websites to reload images and data

Since these are independent checkboxes, you can clear cached files without removing cookies and site data. It is the cookies (and sometimes offline website data) which keep you logged in to sites.

If you were saving logins in Firefox's built-in Lockwise password manager, that should not be affected by either of those choices. I have no idea how that happened, if that is what happened the last time.

By the way, why do you need to clear Firefox's cache?
