Recently I've been receiving a lot of junk mail. Thunderbird flags it as junk but I would like to prevent it from even showing in my 'Inbox'.

The emails always start with,

'Hi Aaedrzferf! So glad you signed up for the 30 Day Challenge! Before we get started, I just need to take care of a little housekeeping, so could you please follow these 2 simple steps to complete the sign up process! STEP 1: CONFIRM EMAIL To confirm your request, please click here. '

Now I know not to do anything except delete the bloody thing but it would suit me better if it never even showed up. Hence I thought to create a message rule to delete it unceremoniously. As these emails are being sent to the first part of my email adress, followed by 'aol.com', I don't know how to set up a rule as the rules seem to be set up by email address. As I don't have this email address in my 'Accounts' (because it's non-existent), can anyone suggest how I can achieve my goal?

Thank you.

Check your Junk Settings.

If email has been marked as 'Junk' by Thunderbird then it should be being filtered into the 'Junk' folder (if POP account) or the 'Spam' folder (or whatever it is called on the server).

Right click on mail account name in Folder Pane and selct 'Settings' then select 'Junk Settings' for the mail account.

This means you can set the individual settings for the account. Info here: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/thunderbird-and-junk-spam-messages

I've also added an image below as a guide.

The default settings are set here if using version 78*

  • Menu app icon > Options
  • left pane select 'Privacy & Security'
  • scroll down to 'Junk' section

Suggest you use:

  • Select checkbox 'When I mark messages as junk:
  • Select 'Move them to the accounts 'Junk' folder'
  • I leave all messages as not read, so the increasing number of new informs to check every so often just in case a good email goes to wrong place, but it is your choice if you wanthem marked as read.
  • Select checkbox 'Enable adaptive junk filter logging'

Basically, they should not be in your Inbox. Junk Settings should put them in the correct folder eg: Junk / Spam You can set up the Junk folder to get auto emptied periodically or do it manually with a right click on 'Junk' folder and select 'Empty Junk'.

Remember to periodically compact your Junk folder to fully remove all 'marked as deleted and hidden' emails to clean up the file.

Hi Toad-Hall.

Thank you for your help. After looking at your suggestions I discovered that for the email account that is receiving the junk mail, I don't have a junk or spam folder. I do for all my other email accounts though. I've tried to recreate these folders but can't determine how. Are you able to help?

Thanks, Donald

If this is an imap mail account: See if you need to subscribe to see the server 'Spam' or perhaps it's called 'Spam Mail' or similar. Right click on imap mail account name in Folder Pane and select :Subscribe Click on 'Refresh' Select Spam folder and click on 'Subscribe' click on OK

If POP account: Right click on pop mail account name in Folder Pane and select 'New folder' Name the folder Junk, spelt with capital J click on 'Create Folder'

Then go into Account Setting > Junk Settings and make sure account is using that folder.
