On my Mac running Catalina and version 90.0 of FF when I typed in the URL field maps.google.com it came up with a message that the site was not https. After closing and reopening FF it correctly went to maps.google.com. Why would this occur

Hmm, this can happen if for some reason you were using a proxy or VPN or security software that sends its own certificate to Firefox instead of the actual website certificate.

We normally advice to use 'No Proxy' for the connection settings in this case.

  • Settings -> General -> Network: Connection -> Settings

If you do not need to use a proxy to connect to internet then try to select "No Proxy" if "Use the system proxy settings" or one of the others do not work properly.

That does not explain why when I closed and reopened FF within a minute with the same configuration worked.
