Suddenly could not send emails from PC since 6 October. I can receive emails. Websites that check whether other sites are down say that mail.optusnet.com.au is DOWN, whether I use Firefox or Chrome. Same result if I use my mobile phone when I am at home using home internet but another different browser.Optus has had me change my password 5 times in last 4 days - no different. I have turned off Public and Private Windows Firewall and still not been able to send emails. I can send emails from my Optus Webmail. I have latest Windows10, Thunderbird 91.2.0 (64 bit) 'currently on the release update channel'. Optus not helping. Its a business email as main account so desperately need fix. I had not made any changes to my system prior to the problem.

Those settings do appear to match those specified by Optus.

So of course the next obvious thing to check is antivirus. The frequency with which they manage to loose the plot on a new Thunderbird version is truly incredible really.

Restart the operating system in safe mode with Networking. This loads only the very basics needed to start your computer while enabling an Internet connection. Click on your operating system for instructions on how to start in safe mode: Windows 10, Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP, OSX

If safe mode for the operating system fixes the issue, there's other software in your computer that's causing problems. Possibilities include but not limited to: AV scanning, virus/malware, background downloads such as program updates.

Thanks for that but it didn't work. Same message error appears 'sending message failed. .....because connecting to outgoing server (SMTP) mail.optusnet.com.au failed. .....verify settings and try again'. How can I revert to the prior Thunderbird update. May my PC just hates the new one.

BTW - We just uninstalled the latest version on Thunderbird (that was updated last week) and went to the previous version ( which did work) and that version DOES NOT WORK EITHER!!!

Still trying to sort this. Does the 'mailbox' provider password for the main email address (in 'Saved logins' on Thunderbird) have to be the same as the SMTP password for the same (main) email address? When I look at Preferences>Privacy & Security>Saved Logins in Thunderbird there are two email addresses, my business one (the default main address), and my personal one. In the Provider column they both show mailbox://mail.optusnet.com.au, and below that the (outgoing?) SMTP://mail.optusnet.com.au associated with the main business email. The mailbox passwords for my business and personal addresses have been changed in the last couple of days, the SMTP password for the main business email was last changed 3 years ago. Should it have the same password as the mailbox business email?

The smtp password is the same as for the incoming server, but if you have 2 or more accounts, make sure each one is sending on an smtp with the same User Name (email address), i.e. the personal account sends on the personal smtp and the business account sends on the business smtp.

Tools/Account Settings, select an account in the left pane, then check Outgoing Server (SMTP) in the right pane. Choose the correct smtp, and check that the User Names match by clicking Edit SMTP server...

Add extra smtp servers if necessary and give each a distinct Description, e.g. OptusPers and OptusBiz.
