I can not, for some reason, sign into my Gmail account on Thunderbird. The password I'm entering matches the password on my google account. I'm stumped.

Any help is appreciated.

Hello,

Google does not support direct login to their pop, imap, and smtp services. You must change the authentication type to oauth, which will prompt you with a google login screen for the oauth token. I believe it automatically changes your settings when doing this, but if not, you will have to go to google's account settings and enable insecure connected apps. Please note, Google notes these as insecure for a reason, they have low-level access to your google account.

For more help please refer to Thunderbird and Gmail

Please let us know if this solves your problem, or if you need further help.

Thanks for the reply, Andmadgo. I have to confess I didn't understand a word of it. Two days ago I could log onto my gmail account from Thunderbird. Now I can't, it says I have the wrong password. I've entered the gmail password to no avail. That's all I know and understand. If you can dumb down your reply, it would be helpful.

Thx

Google have changed the way they work. So either you make changes in Thunderbird to accommodate that, or you do not get your mail. Is that clear enough for you?

So go to account settings on the menu, select you gmail account and under server settings change the authentication method to oAuth.

Then go to the bottom of the account list in account settings and select outgoing server (SMTP) select your gmail outgoing account there and edit it. Change the outgoing server authentication method to oAuth as well.

All done.

You let Thunderbird populate them for you when you set up the account. Or you use the ones specified by google in their settings page. https://support.google.com/mail/answer/7126229?hl=en#zippy=%2Cstep-change-smtp-other-settings-in-your-email-client

Asking anyone but the provider is not a good idea as really the only one that knows what setting will be accepted is the email provider, not the mail client, or the guy next door or your green grocer. The mail service provider.

You will see that rarely are the settings for a mail provider mentioned on this site without a link to the providers page describing them. This is because if you state the wrong server name, your password and account name will be transmitted to that server. If it is collecting such information then I guess you have just been hacked.

Thanks Andmadgo.

I ended up removing the gmail account from T-Bird and then setting it up again. That allowed me to fill it all in. I also found the Server name on ServerSMTP. I appreciate your help.

Gmail has a nifty "cheat sheet" for setting up your non-gmail client to get your gmail. It's a summary of the answers to the other reply-humans above, plus it covers some items that you may encounter as you work through it.

Go to: Gmail Help Then: Check Gmail through other email platforms

These quotes are direct screen copies, so I expect they are correct.

It's detailed and straight forward, heck even I could figure it out. Just follow their instructions carefully.

They also give you opportunity to reset your gmail password if you've forgotten it and your password manager is being witless.
