frequent "not responding" message, sometime when doing basic GUI operations, e.g., opening dropdown menu, scrolling window. Sometimes when no operation is requested! Sometimes folder operations are reported in messagebar at bottom. What gives? Almost impossible to use as email client. Win10, updated to current, Thunderbird 32, updated to current. Task manager shows plenty of CPU and memory available, no other app running. Message is accompanied by spinning circle icon. Multiple email accounts; tried bringing all inboxes up-to-date, empty spam/trash folder, problem persists. No add-ons. No problems noted with Firefox or Gmail.

Does"Thunderbird 32" mean Help > More Troubleshooting Info shows Thunderbird 32 ?

more options

It means that: 1. The executable I use to launch Thunderbird is in C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Thunderbird\ 2. "Help->About Thunderbird" shows "102.2.2 (32-bit)" 3. Task Manager shows the process as :"Thunderbird (32 bit)"

w/r/t your query, "Help > More Troubleshooting Info" shows: "... User Agent Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64; rv:102.0) Gecko/20100101 Thunderbird/102.2.2 OS Windows_NT 10.0 19044 Application Binary C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Thunderbird\thunderbird.exe ..."

How do you interpret the conflicting information?

> How do you interpret the conflicting information?

If any Thunderbird is already installed on a computer and you install Thunderbird 64-bit, it will install into the existing directory. It matters not whether that directory has a 32 bit or 64 bit desigination - there is no functional difference.

Please post your results after updating to 102.3.0 after it becomes available.

What results?

1. If "Help->About Thunderbird" shows "102.2.2 (32-bit)" , isn't that definitive indication that it is a 32-bit version? 2. Is there any definitive information showing that the next version (102.30 ) specifically addresses any "not responding" software defect? Do you have a link discussing expected changes in 102.30?

Thanks.

102.3.0 is just becoming available.

It does have performance fixes. Check the release notes.

more options

1. Deleted 32 bit Thunderbird, downloaded and installed 64-bit version. No difference, still "Not Responding" and spinning circle 'in process" icon. 2. Did update to 102.30. No improvement, now sometimes "Thunderbird has crashed" popup.

Thunderbird opens three processes when running. Is this usual? Thunderbird does almost constant disk activity, this when there is no network activity showing. Is this normal? Selecting Exit menu choice leaves Thunderbird process(es) running for some time after the window closes, with almost constant disk writing. Is this normal? Does Thunderbird log anomalies and errors? Is this documented? Do you have a link? It looks like 102.30 does not address "not responding" problems. The described performance improvements appear to be "Thunderbird startup performance improvements". The "not responding" problem(s) do not appear to be related to startup.

Does anyone other than Wayne Mery have any suggestions or advice?

Thanks

Not suprising. 64bit offers no performance advantage.

Please do Help > More Troubleshoot Info > scroll down to crashes. Please post your crash IDs here (they start with "BP-"

No, and no.

Such issues require special tools.

Please do https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/profiling-thunderbird-performance and upload your performance profile, which will provide you with a URL, to post here.

Bear in mind, "Not Responding" does not have a specific diagnosis, it is a general symptom whose causes can be numerous. Typically the cause is determined by process of elimination.
