I believe this started happening when I upgraded to the 4.0 RC and then downgraded back to 3.6.8.

When I open the History Sidebar, there's nothing there and I can't find anything with a search. Same with the Library; the History section of the Library is completely blank.

Not even pages visited in the current session are there. It's just permanently blank.

HOWEVER!

The Location Bar's autocomplete feature still searches my history. Pages visited within the current session are also listed in the autocomplete... but only for the duration of the session. They are not saved.

Also, frustratingly, the autocomplete does not show up unless at least one of the matches is saved in my history.

My Bookmarks are working just fine. So are my Recently Closed Tabs and Windows lists; if I visit a page, close the tab and restart Firefox, it won't be in my address bar autocomplete, but it WILL be in my Recently Closed Tabs.

Thing is, like I said, only History is affected, not Bookmarks.

I don't want to lose my history, so unless it's possible for a problem in places.sqlite to only affect History, I consider deleting the file a last resort.

Okay, I renamed places.sqlite, left places.sqlite.corrupt alone, and didn't see anything else.

I lost a couple of bookmarks. History now saves, however, and the Sidebar/Library are populated with new pages I visit.

Some of my older history disappeared from autocomplete, but not all of it; there are still a lot of sites I can find with autocomplete that I can't find in History. I guess it's reading these sites from the .corrupt file?

Unless there's another solution I can try that would preserve history, I guess this is the best I can do...

Entries in the location bar drop down list with a yellow (blue on Mac) star at the right end are bookmarks.
You can remove such a bookmarked item that shows in the list if you open that url in a tab and click the yellow star in the location bar.
This will open the "Edit This Bookmark" dialog and you can click the Remove button to remove the bookmark if you want to remove such a bookmarked entry.

I have tried that and countless other solutions and this issue continues. I have tried removing the Firefox profile, deleting Firefox registry keys and folders before reinstalling, renaming places.sqlite, deleting places.sqlite, and other solutions I found on the net. Nothing seems to fix this issue. If I backup to the 3.6 version, that fixes it. I also decided to install Opera and that one is not having any issue with a disappearing history. But I do not like it nearly as much as I like Firefox. Help!
