"Remember password" button won't respond on 4.0.1
Every time I get the "Remember password" popup (the one with the key), I hit "Remember Password" but the window won't respond. I've tried clicking the actual words, tried clicking the drop-down button and _then_ clicking "Remember Password," and it still does not respond--but "Not now" DOES respond.
I checked my Security settings, and under Security, I DO have "Remember passwords for sites" checked. I also tried disabling NoScript to make sure that wasn't the problem, and I still cannot get this browser to remember a _single_ password

Click the Firefox button, go to Add-ons, then Extensions and disable AVG Safe Search. Then try again.
The best way of using the password utility is to create a Master Password by clicking the Firefox button, then go to Options | Options | Security menu. This has the added advantage of encrypting the data so that it cannot be read by third party tools which is the case at the moment. See: Security settings
One other thing I almost forgot. If you have Firefox configured to clear history on shutdown, it won't remember passwords. See http://kb.mozillazine.org/User_name_and_password_not_remembered

I went into the Add-Ons, and it actually says AVG Safe Search is disabled due to being incompatible with 4.0.1.
Also, I have Firefox configured to remember my history, as far as I can tell.
The history menu where you can configure different options is located via Options | Options | Privacy. Check to make sure "Clear history when Firefox closes" is not checkmarked. I've attached a screenshot for you.
Just looked...mine is definitely unchecked.
It is possible that there is a problem with the files key3.db and signons.sqlite that store the encrypted names and passwords in Firefox.
Rename the files key3.db and signons.sqlite in the Firefox profile folder.
You can add .old to the file names (key3.db.old and signons.sqlite.old) or move them to another folder to make it possible to undo the action.
You need to set a new Master Password after renaming or deleting key3.db and all currently saved passwords are lost.
If that has worked then you can remove the renamed files that are no longer needed.
See:
- "Troubleshooting" in http://kb.mozillazine.org/Password_Manager
- Password Exporter: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/2848
I was never using a master password in the first place, just trying to get it to remember individual passwords, so this doesn't help.
Also--I just got Firefox 5.0 and it's not helping either. I'm not sure what else I can do short of backing up my bookmarks, deleting my Firefox, and reinstalling.
Did you try to rename or move the two files that I mentioned to see if Firefox creates new files that work?
There is not much difference between using a master password an not using it. Both use the same two files. There is only an additional encryption key stored in the file key3.db that extends the already stored default key with an extra encryption level if you use a MP.
