In previous versions of Firefox the icon from the website, e.g. eBay, Craigslist, Amazon, Gmail, and others, would show up on the left side of the tabs. Now it will show the icons for one or two of these websites but the rest will be like blank document icons - white rectangles with tiny turned down upper right corners. I miss my icons! I want them back!

That is certainly not normal behavior.

See if you've changed the settings for favicons

I went to the link you provided and on the page indicating Firefox 4 it shows how the icons USED to look in the tabs. But beyond that, I'm confused. I couldn't figure out the favicon thing. I'm a bit of a novice. It was just easier to find the correct sites when the open tabs had the site's icons on them.

OH! And I forgot to indicate that most of my tabs now look like the about:config tab.

Thanks for any assistance.
