I finally hit the 'update' alert on Firefox this morning. Went through the normal install (same file locations, etc) for v6. It never reopened after the install, so I tried to manually open. I keep getting the 'This application failed to start because xul.dll was not found.' I did the uninstall, restarted the computer, re-installed, and get the same error. I've tried this twice now and still no luck. I'd like to reinstall an earlier version, but can't find it on the Mozilla site.

Do a clean reinstall.

Download a fresh Firefox copy and save the file to the desktop.

  • Uninstall your current Firefox version.
  • Do not remove personal data when you uninstall the current version.

Remove the Firefox program folder before installing that newly downloaded copy of the Firefox installer.

  • It is important to delete the Firefox program folder to remove all the files and make sure that there are no problems with files that were leftover after uninstalling.

Your bookmarks and other profile data are stored elsewhere in the Firefox Profile Folder and won't be affected by a reinstall, but make sure that you do not select to remove personal data if you uninstall Firefox.

I went through that process three times, and had two of my developers and my network engineer confirming all that. Never worked. Even tried jacking in the xul.dll manually from someone else running the current version - no go. I ended up installing it to a different drive/location, and the install took. Not sure why that happened as I'd been doing the updates to the same location for years without an issue.
