I have a co-worker, who recently upgraded to FF 7 and now his bookmarks are gone. How can I get them restored. I've done the tasks mentioned in the various articles (like look for the profile path, etc.) but no luck

The user recently upgraded to FF7. His bookmarks were there yesterday, but now they are gone. I looked at his bookmark toolbar, but nothing is there either, plus he doesn't have a json file w/ any bookmarks. The only file I can see that might be helpful, is the places.sqlite file. How can I get his bookmarks restored?

No json bookmark backups in itself implies a new profile was created, find the old profile and switch to it or replace new profile with old profile. Backup all profiles first with Firefox down. Firefox must be down for most work on profiles.

Use the following to see if you have more than one profile or your lost bookmarks in the bookmarkbackups folder.

Type about:support into the location bar the click on "Open Containing Folder" that will take you to your current profile. The bookmarkbackups folder has 5 backups (.json files) any of which can be restored with Firefox up through restore bookmarks.

But your co-worker created a new profile. (you refers to your instructions to coworker)

Open your profile folder and go up one level to see if you have multiple profiles ...

HELP (Alt+H) --> Troubleshooting information... --> "Open Containing Folder" (or type about:support into the location bar then click on "Open Containing Folder")
note the filename, then go up one level to see if you have additional profile folders.

Check the dates of places.sqlite (new in Fx3) for update date just before you went to Fx7 Since it is updated each time you close your session that would be a good place to check.

If you find one then note its filename (the profile name is part of the filename) and then start the Firefox Profile Manager and open with that profile.

To prevent the problem in the future don't let Firefox start up for you after downloading and installing a new version. Instead exit the install at that last point, and restart Firefox in your normal manner.

renamed the new profile folder to the old profile folder and everything showed up. Don't know why I didn't think to try that before. Thanks for the info. Good to keep on hand for future issues.
