Since upgrading to Windows 8 Pro (with a downloaded upgrade, not a "clean" instal, so all my apps and settings were retained) I get the following error message when starting my customised version of Firefox with several pinned tabs, or when flash content loads in an uncustomised version in another user account, or when that version is closed if no flash content is loaded :-

(Title) - FlashPlayerPlugin_11_5_502_110.exe - Application Error

(Content) - "The instruction at 0x71a30000 referenced memory at 0x71a30000. The memory could not be written. Click on OK to terminate the program"

This also happened with the 11.4.402 version prior to today's update.

I have tried running the browser with add-ons disabled, and uninstalled/re-installed Firefox, but the problem remained. Can anyone tell me what the problem is and how to fix it?

I have found the solution to my flash problem (see my reply to cor-el), so I hope it also answers yours.

If you have TrusteerRapport on your computer then open Task Manager (as Administrator), then under processes click on each of the three Rapport entries and click end task for each. Then run Firefox and try it, I hope it solves things for you too. Be aware that, unless you uninstall Trusteer, it will start up again if you do a restart, and you will have to repeat this step. I am about to send a report to Trusteer asking if they are aware of this and have it in hand.

If you don't have Rapport, then perhaps a similar program which runs in the browser without being a plugin or extension may be to blame. Good luck!

I upgraded to Windows 8 pro yesterday and it's noticeable that explorer works fine on all websites... firefox has this same error message and I've spent an hour disabling and enabling add-ons, updating plug-ins and downgrading to last version but it still has the same problem!

Help....

Same problem here.

You can check for problems caused by recent Flash updates and try these:

  • disable a possible RealPlayer Browser Record Plugin extension for Firefox and update the RealPlayer if installed
  • disable protected mode in Flash 11.3 and later
  • disable hardware acceleration in the Flash plugin
  • downgrade the Flash player to version 10.3

For me, the problem was with Trusteer. An update of Trusteer is available which solves this issue. All okay now.

Thank you for your response. I had already come across these suggestions but they are not relevant to my problem as they relate to issues that occur once the flash plugin is running, in my case the problem was that the plugin would not run. However you have led me to the actual solution through the link to the flash troubleshooting page which I had not seen before, and I'm truly grateful to you for that.

There is mention there of the banking security program TrusteerRapport causing problems with flash and I did have problems before with this program when Firefox updated to v.15 (though not with flash). I stopped Trusteer and my problem disappeared!

Once again thank you for your interest.

@JFFV - Which OS are you running/country are you in?

My version of Trusteer said no updates were available. I uninstalled it, downloaded a fresh copy and tried to install it but got an error message saying my system was not supported.

I'm in the UK, running Windows 8 Pro.

@Gordon.Hay - I am also in the UK and running Windows 8 Pro with firefox 16.0.2 and rapport trusteer 3.5.1207.27 (64 bit version).

@JFFV - Thanks for that, I have now been able to re-install Trusteer using compatibility settings, but it is version 1205.15 and states it is up to date with no updates pending, and of course the problem with flash is still there.

I will now try to get the newer version you have from Trusteer.

@JFFV - Well that was an annoying couple of hours. I installed the 64-bit version, which was 1207.31 btw, and soon after restarting my computer began to freeze up. I had to cold boot it to get it going again, but nothing would load, it froze again, and I had to use my system recovery disc to restore it (fortunately a scheduled back-up ran last night).

I uninstalled the old version of Trusteer, installed the 64-bit again, with the same result, ending with a system image restore. Needless to say I have uninstalled Trusteer altogether and run Ccleaner, so everything is fine again.

I have emailed Trusteer 3 times now and await their response, but I somehow doubt I will bother with it again, unless they can convince me that the fault lies in my machine.

As a matter of interest, did you upgrade to Win8, as I did, or is your version a clean install?

@Gordon.Hay - Sorry to hear about that. FYI I upgraded from Win7. I do not recall uninstalling Trusteer (I think that it was done automatically as part of the update). The consumerization of IT is not a vain word - we are not simply users, we are also IT support... Good luck.

@JFFV - Thanks for that. I will wait to see what response I get from Trusteer before I do anything else - it's a pity, because I think it's something worth having, but it shouldn't be this problematic.
