Firefox will not shut down properly, requiring shut down through the Windows Task Master box.
Previously this same question has been answered and closed, but not resolved and it states over 600 people have the same problem. Firefox will not shut down, and needs to be shut down through task box, surely this is not a real solution.
I have gone through all the processes stated https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/firefox-hangs-or-not-responding#w_firefox-hangs-when-you-quit-it but they don't seem to work. I have Firefox 17.0.1 with windows 7. This proves a huge security issue on a shared computer when the history is set to be cleared each time the browser is closed - when it fact nothing is being cleared.
Mozilla can you actually please provide a reason why this is happening and fix it?

Sorry you are having continuing problems.
This is not a normal situation. Unfortunately there are quite a few possible causes. See for instance my recent reply in /questions/946228#answer-395085.
Closing firefox by killing processes with task manager or similar is not intended as a permanent solution, but only as a workaround that gets you out of a situation.
I am not sure I have seen any peak in similar questions on the forum,or in the feedback (e.g) so we may be looking at a problem with your own machine/setup,rather than any generalised Firefox issue.
- Please may I ask you to list what steps you have now tried in resolving this issue? (I did not see any previous post in this forum by you on this issue).
- When did you first encounterthis problem, and did it correspond with any obvious change in your computers setup or software?
- Is this an intermittent problem or does it occur each time you use firefox?
I have this problem too... Ever since v18.0 I cannot longer shut down Firefox properly! Further more... With each new version I cannot longer use my favourite toolbars. What's the problem with them toolbars? They could be used on former versions, so why not longer on new versions? But fix that damned close-issue!
Hi ficje,
Closedown/hang on exit
As I explained above (with in line links) this sort of problem is likely to be on the individual users machine and not be a general Firefox problem.
Toolbars
Are these the standard toolbars or something extra that you or some other software has installed ?
You would do better asking your own question and starting a new thread using /questions/new
Some have reported that deleting the secmod.db file in the Firefox Profile Folder has helped.
This file is used by the software security device that handles secure connections and encrypting passwords.
You can use this button to go to the Firefox profile folder:
- Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Show Folder
I have this problem too, and have had it on both my desktop and laptop
Hi, Kashegan01,
Sorry you are having problems.
By all means read solutions and follow links in this and other threads.
It is much better however if you start your own separate thread by using /questions/new if you are unable to solve the problem after reading about it. Please also do your best to follow the prompts asking for Troubleshooting information, when you post your question.
I you do ask your own question come back here and mention that as others may be interested in it.

Firefox will not shut down for me either, without going into file manager to force it off. I tried all the suggested ideas, nothing works. This has happened before twice. Previously I deleted and then re-installed Firefox (after nothing else worked) and after it would work fine again. This time even re-installing does not fix it! I feel Firefox is the best browser, but this problem makes it something I don't want to use and right now I don't know what else to try. :( Windows 7, latest Beta.
Did you follow the links from /questions/946228#answer-395085
if that does not help post back here again AND please confirm you have started your own thread using /questions/new
