My browsing sessions are being hijacked as Firefox opens some pages. Started when updated to v20.

Open pages spontaneously change to random advertising sites. happens a lot to yahoo home page. does not appear to happen in IE10 or chrome. also there is a pop-up box showing up at the bottom of some pages asking if I want to go to some ad on the page.

Sounds suspicious. You may want to run some supplemental security scans. These two tools are highly regarded:

SUPERAntiSpyware : http://www.superantispyware.com/

Meanwhile, within Firefox, disable ALL newer, nonessential, and unrecognized extensions here:

orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons > Extensions category
