Since at least update 16 Firefox has become incrementally slower and more unresponsive. Firefox demands all available system resources and grinds everything to halt. Outdated as it maybe, surely a 1.25 Ghz processor and 1 gig of ram on XP should be enough to run a browser??? All is good until I open Firefox, how to limit these demands? I

Hello try to Reset your Firefox,

The Reset Firefox feature can fix many issues by restoring Firefox to its factory default state while saving your essential information. Note: This will cause you to lose any Extensions, Open websites, and some Preferences.

To Reset Firefox do the following:

  1. Go to Firefox > Help > Troubleshooting Information.
  2. Click the "Reset Firefox" button.
  3. Firefox will close and reset. After Firefox is done, it will show a window with the information that is imported. Click Finish.
  4. Firefox will open with all factory defaults applied.

I have not long ago run Firefox on XP systems with even lower specs.

Not using a lot of tabs especially with Video content on them may help. (Email may be surprisingly heavy as well). Also try to ensure there are not background updates or upgrades running on Firefox, and for that matter that the computer itself is not running background tasks such as disk indexing.

Maybe consider to install a new video display card because the one that you have is rather old (driver date: 11-28-2002).

Also make sure that your security software isn't slowing down Firefox.

Boot the computer in Windows Safe mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen) as a test to see if that helps.
