I do want to enable Mac OS X Notification Center for TB. But I did not find any useful info how to do it. The link you are referring to does not indicate how to add more apps in NC. Can you help?

In Mac Open "System Preferences" > Notification

• Check for Thunderbird in Leftside of Notification
  • Change the option according to your need.

OK I see. But how do you get to add the apps in the list in NC. For me TB is not listed (nor Firefox)?

try reinstalling, if they were present before the update it might not have picked them up (Only guessing here)

I actually just upgraded to Mavericks. And I was not aware of Notification before this upgrade. So no idea if TB was listed there before. On Apple Support they actually tell me that Mozilla app developer needs to add the functionality to their app. Any idea how to get in touch with them to propose them this?
