The only way I can get Thunderbird to access my Gmail account is to enable "allow access for less secure apps" in gmail. That's not a very good way to fix this problem.

Am I missing something else??? All I want is to allow pop access to gmail. Should be supported natively in Gmail. I don't have that same issue with outlook.

Thanks, Rich

I think this is because Gmail is using Oauth (and not even quite according to the standard...) More info on this issue van be found in bug 849540 bug 849540 - Log in to Google Talk (XMPP) and Gmail (IMAP/SMTP) using OAuth.

I don't think it's too big of a security problem to allow access for "less secure apps" though. Gmail can also be configured to warn you when there is suspicous activity for your account/email...

Can't see how to set google account as recommended, in order to warn of suspicious activity, from their settings options.
