I've had Thunderbird working for years on my PC. This morning, after a reboot, I started Thunderbird and it began by asking if I want to create a new account (like this was a fresh install). I still see my profile directory under %APPDATA%\Thunderbird\Profiles. I have since started TB using my existing email account info, but now all my old mail, other accounts and settings are not being displayed.. What is the deal!

I fixed the issue by restoring my profile from a backup from a week or so ago. Not sure what the actual problem is and I guess I don't care (as long as this was a one time thing).

the issue is the file profiles.ini in the folder %appdata%\Thunderbird contains the wrong path or is corrupted in some way. The lunked information offers a way using the profile manager to reset this information. A restore from backup is like killing a mosquito with a bazooka. It does however work.
