Hi, I am looking for advice for the best, compatible AD-BLOCKER add on for FF version 33.1.1

I am finding that web pages dont load, just hang or "connection timed out" and I'm thinking its because of my ad blocker add on I'm using. I did go to addons and searched for the latest ad blocker, however, I dont think the one I got yesterday is working. So....all that said, what would be the BEST ad blocker add on for the version FF I have? Thanks

Hello,

Adblock Plus {web link} is a popular extension that does what you are looking for. It also has other add-ons that extends its features, such as one that hides text ads {web link} .

Hi CoryMH Thanks for the quick reply. Sadly, thats what I've been using for several years, but it doesn't seem to be working like it used to. Seems like after every FF upgrade, the web pages loaded slower and slower till now, they hardly load at all unless I click the "refresh" button. So, thats why I thought it was the ad-blocker that was the problem. Unless you have some other ideas as to why web pages just load and load and nothing comes up unless I hit the refresh button??? Thoughts??? Thanks, Sue

Hi Sue,

I notice you have the Avast plugin installed - some are known to cause browsing issues so you can disable it to see if that speeds things up a little. I am not sure what special features the Avast extension has in Firefox, but I find that the Web Shield (which you can modify in the Avast interface, and is separate from this extension) is sufficient enough at blocking suspicious links and downloads.

What usually slows down sites are scripts, so consider using a javascript blocking extension such as NoScript. The only issue with this one is that it might take some time to set up as you need to figure out what scripts you need to use for websites to operate properly, and what scripts you can disable since they only load up advertisements or trackers which slow down your browsing. What you can do with NoScript is allow scripts globally, and then disable scripts one by one if you find your browser becoming sluggish.

Hi again CoryMH Okay thanks so much. I disabled the avast as you suggested. I'll give that a try and look into that NoScript you mentioned. Would that be the only things you can think of, that would slow down web pages when loading? Thanks again for helping me out.

It really depends on the sites you are browsing. You can try going through the following articles to see if they provide you with more hints:

Some users installed extensions that unload tabs from memory to help boost performance, you can see if one of these help you:
