The spell check keeps turning off. I'll be typing and notice a misspelled word and notice they're not underlined (in red). This is sporadic on most sites, but constant on google calendar. It is working on this form with no problems. On google calendar I'll click on a day to open up a form to add an event, click to turn on spell check, it will stay on while I'm filling in that box, but when I click a new date to input the next event in the next box, the spell check is turned off again.

This isn't the only site, but it's the only one I can remember at this time.

Do you have a dictionary installed and selected?

You can see which dictionary is selected if you right-click in a text area and open the Languages submenu.

At least one dictionary should be installed and have a check mark to indicate that it is selected.

  • Open the "Add Dictionaries" link to install a dictionary if you do not have one.
  • Make sure that [X] "Check Spelling" in the right-click context menu is check-marked.

You can enable or disable spell checking globally:

  • Tools > Options > Advanced : General: Browsing: "Check my spelling as I type"
  • for MAC > *FIREFOX > Preferences > Advanced : General: Browsing: "Check my spelling as I type"
  • Firefox > Preferences > Content > Languages

You can look here for dictionaries:

Wow, just copying and pasting something irrelevant.

Explain to me HOW my spell check would work all the time on some sites, sometimes on other sites if there was no dictionary.

If it was not enabled globally then it would not work on any site until I turn it on.

Wow, almost 6,000 answers and only 475 solutions. You do this a lot, I mean just post something that has nothing to do with the persons problem. You didn't even read my post because your answer has NOTHING to do with what I'm talking about. This is almost as bad as Yahoo answers, where people post answers just to raise their stats, that must be what you're doing.

Sorry if I sound rude, but if you're going to help, you could at least have the courtesy to read what I posted.

It is possible that the website is disabling the Firefox spell check. Try to toggle "Check Spelling" off/on in the right-click context menu to see if that helps. See also:

You can right-click the text area and open the Inspector (Inspect Element) to see if the text area has this spellcheck="false" attribute.

Thanks for your reply cor-el. I already found the link you posted before I posted, nothing there was helpful.

I used the inspector and there was nothing about spelling in the code.

As far as toggling it in the right-click context menu: Right now spell check is working on all sites I have open except google calendar. In google calendar I open a box, toggle the spell-check to on, then after I close that box and open another, it's off and I need to turn it on again. It does stay on as long as I keep the box I'm typing in open, but if I close it and re-open it, it will be off and I need to toggle it on again.

I'm sure it was happening in wordpress, when I'm adding a new page or post, but now it's working, it's staying on so I'm not sure on that. As soon as this happens on another site, I'll post the URL here.

Maybe someone can look into the google calendar for now, that is constant and is probably their site but I would like to know.

Oh, by the way, every computer that goes through my shop gets Firefox installed as default. Then I explain to the customer that it's the safest and best working web browser (what's a web browser is the most common question) on the market.

I'm just stating this so you know, I don't have any contempt for anyone that is involved with Mozilla, I love having this browser. Typically I have 30 tabs open and it just works like a rock, as compared to chrome that gets overwhelmed with about 15 tabs open. I don't even deal with IE and Opera doesn't have any features.

I came here to point out a possible problem so that it can be looked into and fixed if needed, to keep this the best browser there is.

My response to iamjayakumars was because he didn't even read my post.

It is possible that there is some JavaScript running on that page that disable the spelling check.

Is this a normal text area or a content editable DIV or IFRAME?

I know that the Google Translate page disables the spell check via that attribute.

<textarea id="source" class="goog-textarea short_text" autocorrect="off" autocomplete="off" autocapitalize="off" spellcheck="false" dir="ltr" tabindex="0" wrap="SOFT" name="text" style="box-sizing: border-box; overflow-y: hidden; overflow-x: auto; padding-right: 20px;"></textarea>

That would be real stupid if they disable spell check on the calendar, but I don't put anything past google. They have some nice programs/products, like google voice, but they don't fix all the bugs.

I'm not sure what it is, I'm not the best at reading code. There is a mix of DIV's and IFRAMES, I think it's a DIV, the first one below. I'm pretty sure it's somewhere in this area I copied, but I think there is more code we can't see, like what is "calmaster". This is the best I can see.

<div id="calmaster" style="overflow: auto; height: 573px;"></div>
<div style="position: absolute; top: -999px; left: -999px; width: 0px; height: 0px;" aria-live="polite" aria-relevant="additions" aria-atomic="true"></div>
<div id="hc-test" style="position: absolute; top: -999px; height: 5px; border-width: …rl("//calendar.google.com/googlecalendar/images/blank.gif");"></div>
<div class="bubble has-bottom-prong has-top-prong" style="z-index: 1001; width: 400px; left: 204px; top: 197px; visibility: visible;"></div>
<iframe src="https://clients5.google.com/pagead/drt/dn/" aria-hidden="true" style="display: none;"></iframe>

Why this concerns me is that I have to update the calendar for our school, and everyone reads it in the school, parents and so on. My spelling sucks to begin with and then sometimes I'm just sloppy and misspell words because I go to quick  :) Doesn't look good when I have postings with misspellings.
