When I am replying to a message, why does my font size mysteriously increase in size?

Too frequently, but intermittently, I will get a huge fluctuation of font size, in replying to someone else's email. I will be replying in a given font size, but then, when typing further or in another place in the text, the smaller font size will mysteriously increase in size, sometimes being very large. This occurs without going to [format, size] menu. It's just so random. The worst thing about this, is that I don't know how to get back to the normal size. The page is stuck in the larger size. If I try to reduce that larger size, going to the menu of format and then size, and if I then print the reduce size on the page, I will get an unreadably small printout.
