I can no longer type in a web address.
The space for a web address at the top of the window has simply disappeared. How do I get it back

Can you try opening a new tab and see if it works then and get back to me? Also have you tried Uninstalling and Installing again?
Thanks :)
Check that you do not run Firefox in full screen mode (Mac: Command+Shift+F).
Try to rename (or delete) the xulstore.json file in the Firefox profile folder.
You can use this button to go to the current Firefox profile folder:
- Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Show Folder (Linux: Open Directory; Mac: Show in Finder)
I am almost 100% sure that I am not in full screen mode when running Firefox.
I couldn't find a way to get to that file to delete it.
I'm still thinking that uninstalling Firefox is the thing, but am leary about getting it reinstalled. Where would I get it? I'm using 16.0.2 on a Mac OS 10.5.8. It is too old to use any higher edition of Firefox.

I had missed that you are on OS X 10.5 with an older Firefox version
In Firefox 16 you can still hide the Navigation Toolbar, so make sure that this toolbar is visible.
You can use one of these to set which toolbars to show.
- View > Toolbars
- Right-click empty toolbar area
Can you attach a screenshot?

- Use a compressed image type like PNG or JPG to save the screenshot
- Make sure that you do not exceed the maximum size of 1 MB
