how do I completely and utterly disable threads (including with default search sort)?

When I search my inbox, even though I have threading disabled via the View -> sort-by -> unthreaded option, threads become re-enabled with search! While I am able to again go to the sort-by menu in the new search tab to disable threads, every time I do a new search threading becoming re-enabled! Threads completely obfuscate interpreting my email exchanges, and it seems pretty ridiculous if this cannot readily be disabled for searching. However, after googling a while and going through all the GUI options I am unable to discern how to completely disable threading. I have tinkered with some of the related config editor thread flags to no avail. Any guidance on how this might be accomplished would be much appreciated. If there are no simple ways to disable this with the GUI prefs or config editor, if anyone could point me in the direction of the relevant sections of the source, this would similarly be appreciated. Thanks!

I found a work-around with the "search as list" extension with selecting the "unthreaded" option in the "columns" section of the preferences. I have trouble fathoming why an extension is required though to disable the default "feature" of conversations/threaded-view.
