paste to comment section stops working facebook

more options

Upon starting computer the cut and paste to a Facebook comment works with no issues. After a while the comment cannot be pasted to, and the cursor when trying to place it to place needs to be tapped to another part of the page before it will show in the comment section. But even after it shows there, you cannot post.

Is it a Facebook glitch you know of or something germane to Firefox?

I will save a photo of my screen the next time it happens and when I get your email reply I will add it if that is possible.

Do you use any content blocking extension like Blur?

If you use extensions (Firefox menu button/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) that can block content (e.g. Adblock Plus, NoScript, Flash Block, Ghostery, Blur) then make sure that such extensions aren't blocking content.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox menu button/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • Switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox menu button/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window

I have a similar problem (Firefox 42.0). If I paste any text into a Facebook comment, the comments box immediately stops working properly. The cursor cannot be controlled, text cannot be edited, and what was pasted sometimes appears multiple times.

I have started in Safe Mode and there's no change.

This is not just some little glitch, it is a very serious problem which renders Facebook un-useable. Please can someone help?

Hi MartyJames, two notes based on an earlier thread (I cannot copy and paste properly or edit pasted text):

(1) If you set dom.event.clipboardevents.enabled back to true, Facebook's comment boxes should work normally

(2) If you keep dom.event.clipboardevents.enabled set to false, you need to type some text into the comment box before pasting to prevent the uneditable phantom text problem

Jscher, that was very helpful indeed, thank you. Turning clipboardevents back on means that Facebook works perfectly now. Though now I am still not able to paste anything into YouTube. (I'll speak about that on the other thread, thanks.)

If you only need to comment on YouTube now and then, you could consider using a "bookmarklet" to block YouTube from intercepting the paste command.

A bookmarklet is a button on your Bookmarks Menu or Bookmarks Toolbar that runs some script code against the page when you click it.

Here's how if you want to try it:

(1) Select and copy this JavaScript code:

javascript:void(addEventListener('paste', function(e){e.stopPropagation()}, true));

(2) Right-click (or on Mac: Ctrl+click) the Bookmarks Toolbar or Bookmarks Menu near where you want the button and choose New Bookmark

(3) Paste the script code in the Location box

(4) Type something in the Name box like YTPaste and click Add Bookmark

When you click the button, it will modify how the page handles the paste command, blocking the site from intercepting it, and allowing it to work normally.
