I'd like to know if there is a way to lock down the home page once it is set to avoid other programs from changing it. AVG is installed on this system and the home page was changed when I logged in this morning.

Some protection programs have that setting in their options.
There are also some add-ons that can help. Go to the Mozilla Add-ons Web Page {web link} (There’s a lot of good stuff here) and search for what you want.
Bookmark and use this; Download the Mozilla Search Reset {web link} This add-on is very simple: on installation, it backs up and then resets your search preferences and home page to their default values, and then uninstalls itself. This affects the search bar, URL bar searches, and the home page.
