I can not open messages sent to me in Winword.

So these are doc or docx files? What do you have in place to read such files? Do you have Word, or a Word document viewer?
Thunderbird can't read them. They use proprietary encoding and Thunderbird doesn't have the necessary decoder. All it can do is hand them to the right program for reading them in.
