My bookmarks have vanished. I have tried all of the tech pages, and have not been able to restore them. I have backup data going back 6 months, but despite uninstalling and reinstalling from any of the backups, I still have no bookmarks. ANy suggestions?

You can check for problems with the places.sqlite database (bookmarks, history) in the Firefox profile folder.

Did you try to restore a JSON backup in the bookmarkbackups folder?

  • Bookmarks > Show All Bookmarks > Import & Backup

The name of a JSON bookmarks backup file includes a total item count (folders and separators included) and an hash value to prevent saving the same backup more than once.

  • bookmarks-YYYY-MM-DD_<item count>_<hash>.jsonlz4.

Hi, cor-el: Thank you for the quick reply. Unfortunately, none of the suggestions did anything. For example, in the Bookmarks>Show All Bookmarks> Import & Backup path, there is no 'Import and Backup' showing in my version of Firefox on this Mac (running Yosemite V 10.10.5). Searches for 'bookmarks' or 'jsoniz4' produce no results. I have gone through the suggestions on the Mozilla site, including uninstalling the latest version and restoring versions from last week and last month. In every case, I wind up with Version 44.0.2 again, without the bookmarks. Very frustrating indeed, since I had over 100 sites bookmarked. My hacking skills lie somewhere between novice and intermediate, so there is no doubt some key piece of understanding lacking here. It appears that the easiest route now is recreating the bookmark listing over the next several weeks Thanks again, Whizerd23

You're welcome.

It is usually not possible to tell why/how places.sqlite gets corrupted. It seems to happen more on Mac than on other platforms.

Here's some useful clues to this issue that may help a developer out there:

-The update wiped out all of my stored passwords.
-The update also erased some of my add-ons, but left others intact.
-Uninstalling the lastest update and restoring any FF version from days, weeks or months ago produces FF V 44.0.2, despite cleaning up stray files after the uninstall.

I hope this can help someone figure out how to avoid this issue and its accompanying frustration. Regards, Whizerd23
