Save link functionality does not work anymore after accidentally dragging mpf file to a tab heading.
Accidentally I dropped a link to an mp4 file to the tab heading in firefox (in Mac Yosemity). Since then, opening a link of this type does not work anymore as it should: it is expected that a file save dialog should appear. Instead, the link is immediately opened within the tab.
The funny thing is: (i) Reinstalling firefox didn't restore the correct functionality. (ii) The same anomly appears in safari now.
So not only firefox is messed up, but my OS must be affected somehow.
Can anyone tell me how to resolve this situation?

I can't help you with Safari, but if you do not want Firefox to play MP4 media that loads in its own tab, you can try this:
(1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter/Return. Click the button promising to be careful.
(2) In the search box above the list, type or paste stand and pause while the list is filtered
(3) Double-click the media.play-stand-alone preference to switch it from true to false
Does that work?

Hi jscher2000, thanks for your reply! It doesn't restore the original behaviour (for instance, it does not preserve the file name) but it saves the file allright. It'll do for me. Thanks!
What I perceived as remaining problem turned out to result from the website. So everything is solved now.
