Can I just change the account name from xxmexx@verizon.net to xxmexx@gmail.com to get email from my new gmail account?

more options

I moved all of my email and contacts from the Verizon servers to my Thunderbird installation. I don't want to use AOL when Verizon changes, so I opened a Gmail account and informed all of my contacts of the change. Now I want to change the account name and email address of my Thunderbird installation to my new Gmail address and pull my new email from there. Do I just change them in the Settings screen, or do I use the "Manage Identities" tool and add the Gmail account? Do I delete the Verizon account from there? (It is still working.) Do I need to get Gmails "Outgoing Server" information, or is that picked up automagically? My issue is that I want to make sure I have access to my old email directory structure and contacts that I just moved when I start using the Gmail account in Thunderbird. I'm hoping I don't have to do a whole new installation of Thunderbird, or something redundant like that.

I'm confident that you will get a response from a Thunderbird expert but I just want to say one thing right now: do not change or delete anything related to your existing account. Thunderbird allows you to set up multiple accounts, each with its own set of folders, and that is essential to avoid potentially losing data.
