Firefox does not navigate to any websites I enter; it just stays on its homepage.
In other words, it makes that "click" sound as though it's about to navigate to the page I entered, but then it just stays put. If I open a new tab, it just stays blank and likewise will not navigate to a website. This issue started right after Firefox told me it was installing updates.
Here's what I've tried already:
1. I refreshed Firefox. Twice. Nothing changed.
2. I completely uninstalled and then reinstalled Firefox, which took some doing because I had to use IE for the first time in a decade. Same exact problem persisted.
3. I manually removed and then re-added Firefox to the list of approved Windows Firewall sites, in case the firewall was the issue post-update.
None of these strategies have worked. Firefox continues to stay on its homepage and not navigate to any websites. I am still using IE to ask this question.

What's your computer system and Firefox version?
Type about:preferences#advanced<Enter> in the address bar.
Under Advanced, Select Network. Look for Configure How Firefox Connects and press the Settings button. If you are using a proxy, make sure those settings are correct. If there is no proxy, first try No Proxy. If there is a problem, then try System Proxy.
I forgot to mention in my OP: I did that already. I tried No Proxy AND System Proxy. I just tried it again to make sure. Neither attempt changed anything.
I'm running version 56.0.1 (64-bit) on Windows 7.
Start your Computer in safe mode with network support. Then start Firefox. Try Safe websites. Is the problem still there?

The safe mode strategy didn't work, either. Firefox still won't open any pages.

Do a malware check with several malware scanning programs on the Windows computer.
Please scan with all programs because each program detects different malware. All these programs have free versions.
Make sure you update each program to get the latest version of their databases before doing a scan.

Many have reported problems with the 64bit program.
cor-el Do you have thoughts on this?
It is possible that third-party (security) software developers have focused on 32-bit Firefox can't handle 64-bit Firefox properly and causes crashes.
Is Bugzilla looking into that?
