I am currently using firefox 56 on Ubuntu 16.04. I want to update to firefox 57 (firefox quantum). I tried updating via the "About Firefox" window (I always update like this) but apparently firefox doesn't detect the new version. I went to the firefox quantum download page, and downloaded firefox 57 and was able to run it. The catch is that an actual installation didn't occur. With that, I mean that there was no desktop icon generated nor did the old firefox uninstall itself. Any ideas on how to properly migrate from firefox 56 to firefox quantum (firefox 57) on Ubuntu?

EDIT: Clarity

If 56 is working for you, you may want to stay there. In Firefox support run a search on Quantum or Quantum slow and you will see there appear to be many problems with memory and unhappiness in layout. 56 wouldn't work for me so I went back to 55.0.3 and am going to stay there for awhile.

Thank you! I'll wait and mark this as solved as soon as I am able to update like that. How long do you think it will take?

Probably another day, or a few hours!

Have heard maybe within the week or a week.

Third-party builds likes the builds provided in a Linux distro in package manager are not updated by Mozilla as Mozilla only provides updates to official builds from mozilla.org like www.mozilla.org/firefox/all/

The tarball from Mozilla is basically a archive as you just extract and run the firefox script as there is no form of installer. You have to create the desktop or panel shortcuts to the firefox script file yourself. Also make sure the Firefox folder has read/write permissions so Firefox can get updates when available.

Thanks! I'll just wait for Ubuntu to update its Firefox repo.

I wanted to wait until the update happened like that, but ok, I'll mark it as solved.
