https://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/firefox/releases/56.0/ Once you have reinstalled, you'll need disable the automatic updates in the options. The ESR of Firefox is probably safer to use as it's still being patched but you lose 6 months worth of performance improvements.

Alternatively http://www.basilisk-browser.org may be an option for those of us who want support but losing XUL is not an option.

Firefox comes in two or more folders on all computers. They are;

Maintenance: (Programs Folder) <Windows Only> Firefox itself: (Programs Folder) And two folders in the profile of each user on the computer for each Firefox profile for that user.

If you remove the Firefox folder, the user folders would not be affected.

Firefox full installer with overwrite the program currently on your system.

You shouldn't lose anything but you can back up your profile folders which are where all the firefox specific information is stored. You can find yours by putting about:profiles into the urlbar of firefox. You should see a root and local folder with a button to open at those locations. Navigate up a directory and copy the whole folder somewhere safe.

Interesting. I don't think that you actually need to uninstall but it might be best to do so. If you do uninstall just make NOT to tick the box that says to delete all the data. That's your profile which would be deleted if you ticked the box.

I think that if you just ran the 56.0 installer it'll give you an option to "upgrade" which will downgrade you. I don't think that there should be any issues but Mozilla probably don't bother to test that use case.

You will need to then go to the options/ menu disable automatic updates or Firefox will almost immediately try to update again.

I even went to the extent of deleting the updater.exe in the C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox directory
