I like Firefox Quantum, but not the changes it made to the native dark theme.

The other day I discovered a new browser called Firefox Quantum had been released by Mozilla. "Exciting", I thought to myself. So I downloaded and installed it. I wish I had known it would completely replace my existing installation before hand. I would have sandboxed the installation to check it out. It's no big deal though, I like the new Firefox... However....

I use windows 10 64 bit and I think I was using Firefox 52 something before I upgraded to Quantum. This version of firefox had a simply beautiful native dark theme with lots of dark grays. which you could turn on by going here: Menu > Customize > Themes > Dark.

Firefox quantum ALSO has a dark theme, in exactly the same place as the overwritten installation. Firefox quantums dark theme however, is BLACK, and looks like a knock off of microsoft EDGE. I really REALLY REALLY want my old dark theme back :(

Is it possible to keep Firefox Quantum without committing to the ugly EDGE theme?

Right, I ws wondering if one of those has the bluish-black color that you're looking for.

You could also try modifying the theme with userChrome.css. Follow the directions here: https://www.userchrome.org/how-create-userchrome-css.html to create a userChrome.css file. When you get to the "adding style recipes to userChrome.css", you could try something like this:

.tab-background[selected="true"]:-moz-lwtheme {
background: rgb(20, 53, 84) !important; /* this sets the color of the tab background */
}
.tab-line[selected="true"] {
background-color : rgb(157, 191, 214); /* this sets the color of the line above the tab */
}

:root:-moz-lwtheme-brighttext {
  --chrome-background-color: rgb(28, 33, 38);
  --chrome-secondary-background-color: rgb(43, 50, 61) !important;
}

There are many third-party themes that you can install here: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/search/?q=dark+theme&type=persona . It's possible that one of those is closer to what you're looking for.

Those "themes" appear to be graphics that get layered behind the default Firefox theme.

See the photo for an example of the pre-quantum "native dark firefox theme" I referred to.

It has flat tabs and icons just like quantum does, but the colors and overall feel is less stark and much more comfortable

Wow, that's great! I see where it's changed the color of the tabs to a faded dark blue. Although, the tab line ( which I imagine is the solid 2px thick line at the top of selected and hovered tabs ) does not show any change no matter what I set the color to.

I wonder if there is a complete reference guide for using the userChrome file.

Oh, sorry, that needs !important added to it, so the correct CSS should be this:

.tab-line[selected="true"] {
background-color : rgb(157, 191, 214) !important;
}

There's not really a reference guide, since you're basically just adding code to Firefox that gets loaded on startup. This website has a bunch of useful resources for learning how use it.

Thanks. I've selected your response from earlier as the answer to this thread. If you could do me a huge solid and have a look at my follow up question, I'd be very very greatful. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1188413
