Unable to attach document - TB crashes every time
Every time I try and attach a document either using the paper-clip or through the File > Attach option, TB crashes.
I am able to drag and drop an image in to the body of the email, but anything else just results in nothing happening.
Have upgraded to the latest version and then downgraded again and still the same result.
Have checked the config editor and the directory it's pointing to seems fine.
Running Windows 10.
The crash log is as follows, can anyone see anything obvious?

Now if you could just post the log id's instead of the logs that would be helpful. See https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/mozilla-crash-reporter-tb#w_viewing-crash-reports
That does however sound like an anti virus interaction however. the crash as soon as you try and attach. What anti virus are you using?
Hi Matt,
Log ID bp-40015efa-2739-46c3-bd32-668100171202
Avast is the antivirus software running.
Thanks!
Just a little confused here. There are a total of 13 crashes with that signature, all of them on windows 8.1. But you are posting here from a mac. Have you not been submitting your crashes?
But I digress. The crash point does appear to be in the process of allocation memory to encode the file as MIME. so I am actually more inclined to look outside Thunderbird for the cause. This is especially as you are using avast and it has a history of aggressively locking things and causing crashes in Mozilla product in general and Thunderbird in particular.
Try rebooting the operating system in safe mode with networking and see if that has the same crash when you use Thunderbird. Click on your operating system for instructions on how to start in safe mode: Windows 10, Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP, OSX
Apologies, you are right it is running on windows 8.
I'm helping a friend out hence me posting from a mac, good spot! I'm currently logged in remotely accessing via Team Viewer so can't do the safe-restart right now, will have to wait until after the weekend.
Interestingly, as a work around, if I select a document from the desktop and select Send To > Mail Recipient the document attaches fine. At least this is a work around for now. Will let you know how I get on with the safe-restart.
Based on the safe restart doing any good. Or you could try in before hand if you wish as there is nothing here that is not really good practice anyway for managing the interactions of ever increasingly aggressive anti virus products.
Exempt the Thunderbird profile from the ant virus scanner, or if you are particularly cautious exempt the file global-messages-db.sqlite and the mail and IMAP mail folders of the profile from the anti virus scanning. the Sqlite file is often huge and Thunderbird sometimes struggles with it's integrity, having an anti virus also trying to scan it while it is being updates is not nice. The same goes for the two mail folders. Thunderbird stores mail in large text files, one per folder. These can be approaching 4Gb in many cases for the "bower birds" that delete nothing and do not compact when it is suggested. Having anti virus products fiddling around there is also not a long term good idea. Data loss from popular anti virus programs quarantining the entire inbox is not all that uncommon. (the symptom is usually "I click on a message in the list and nothing is displayed".) As any "threat" is stored in mime encoded text. It is not as if it is a real threat until something like Thunderbird re-encodes the "threat" back to it's original form.
Also create an exception in the temp folder for nstmp.html in the temp folder (windows key +R type %temp% and press enter to determine the folder location on that machine.) This temp folder has been blocked in the past by Avast causing empty email to be sent after a warning about the file being locked/blocked. So I can see it causing other problem with the composition process with it's scanning of temp files in the temp folder.
