Does it occur in Thunderbird Safe Mode ? Help > Restart with addons disabled

This could mean: An addon extension is causing a conflict or/and It does not like using harware acceleration.
Switch off the hardware aceleration. Thunderbird > Preferences > Advanced > 'General' tab at the bottom under 'Advanced Configuration' uncheck: 'Use hardware acceleration when available' clickon OK
Exit and restart Thunderbird as normal. Test and report back on results.
If you still have an issue. 'Menu icon' > 'Addons' disable one addon at a time. restarting each time. When you disable the one causing a conflict, all should work ok. Maybe the addon needs updating. If it was an addon extension causing the issue, please Report back telling us which one was a problem.
