I think that's right, the "old" new tab page was removed from Firefox 60. To change the new tab page completely (i.e., to do something not listed on the menu that opens from the sprocket icon), you'll need to use an extension.

F*CK OFF EXTENSIONS PLZ! I'm not putting any effort into this SH*T anymore! All my developer colleagues are using Google Chrome and I guess I have to learn to use it; because FF is letting down! It's embarrasing to show something to my colleagues with FF FCOL!

This is a support forum. If someone posts that they have a problem, we suggest a fix or workaround based on whatever is available now.

If you want to plead your case for changes to the new tab page, you could try one or more of these sites, but it sounds like you just want to move on, and that's your call.
