Hi,

I am trying to move to Thunderbird from another Windows email client that I am not happy with.

I have downloaded and installed Thunderbird version 78.13.0 on Windows 10 and set up the account details to access my ISP's IMAP mail server. That server has the standard Inbox, Sent, Drafts, Spam and Trash "special" folders.

My Inbox works fine and I can send and receive emails but I cannot get Thunderbird to show the Sent folder or it's contents.

In the left hand pane I see my mail account (email address). Under my account I see Inbox, Trash, Folders (with a twisty to display all sub-folders), and Mail also with a twisty. If I click on the Mail twisty it shows Drafts and Spam.incoming. I cannot find a Sent folder.

I went to Account Settings, Copies and Folders, When sending messages and made sure the "Place a copy" tick box was ticked. I tried setting the option to the first choice, "Sent folder on ... my IMAP email account". That did not help still no Sent folder. I then tried the second option which is "Other .... my IMAP email account" this opens an option menu with Inbox, Mail, Trash and Folder choices. If I click on Mail the sub options are Drafts and Spam.incoming. None of these choices help either.

So.. how do I set up Thunderbird to work with my IMAP account Sent folder? Any help appreciated.

On a side note, I set up the Drafts setting to keep drafts in "Other... IMAP mail account, Mail, Drafts and it works fine! The Spam.incoming sub-folder seems to be working correctly. The Trash folder shows up but if I click on it it shows no contents which is also not correct.

Thanks

Have you checked the subscribed list to see if all the correct folders are selected as subscribed?

  • Right click on imap mail account name folder in Folder Pane and select 'Subscribe'
  • click on 'Refresh'
  • then select all the folders and click on 'Subscribe'
  • then click on 'OK'

Report back if the 'Sent' folder is not showing in subscribe list. Be aware that the server may called it 'Sent Items' or 'Sent Mail'

re :access my ISP's IMAP mail server. What server are you talking about? Is this a microsoft office365 account ? There have been some reports regarding the subscribe list.

Try this:

  • Right click on imap mail account name folder in Folder Pane and select 'Settings'
  • Select 'Server SEttings'
  • click on 'Advanced..' button
  • uncheck 'Show only subscribed folders'
  • click on 'OK'

Restart Thunderbird. Now try to select and subscribe to folders. Then access the Account Settings > Copies & Folders to select correct folders. Also check the 'Synchronisation & Storage' ...keep messages on this computer 'Advanced' button to make sure folders which need to download full copies are selected.

Subscription list suggestion worked great.

Just be aware that when using the subscribe function, if you just check the boxes it sometimes does not action the subscribe request on my mail, I have to highlight the folder then click the subscribe button on the menu. Plus with Outlook IMAP when naming the folders it recognises folders with a slash in their name (/) but for some reason Thunderbird does not, it took me a long time to arrive at this conclusion, so be careful with folder names!
