Upgrade Issues -- keeps saying there is a pending upgrade

Every time I upgrade -- or attempt to upgrade TBird to a the next version -- I go through this crazy kabuki dance where it claims that I must reboot first because a previous upgrade hasn't concluded. So I reboot. And try to upgrade. Same message. I have Thunderbird installed on two machines .. both Windows 10... one is fairly new HP (7th gen i7); the other other is fairly old custom job (1st Gen i7). The HP is doing fine. It's the older machine that's having issues. My current version of TBird is 78.1.14 (32 bit), which when I check "About" I'm told it's the latest version. However, when I check About it says I am up-to-date. But my HP just updated to version 91.1.2. Seeing that and despite the message in "About" on this machine (not the HP) saying I'm on the latest version -- I downloaded 91.1.2 and tried to install it. No joy. Again .. the message that a previous update is pending and instructions to reboot. I've gone through this cycle twice and .. done both a hard (power cycle) and soft (restart) re3boot -- no change. WHAT is going on?? Thanks!

Perhaps you are another of those with other software offering updates. There is at least one anti virus program pointing out updates that we are not ready to share yet.

The release version of Thunderbird is 91. It was released some time ago, but the team are waiting for issues from new users before going to update everyone route. I got an email this morning advising that 5% of en_US current users will be auto updated from V78. That means that 5% of US English users who have their software check in for update will actually get offered the update. The rest will perhaps get it later if they randomly become the 5% or when the percentage is increase to more or just to everyone. Staged release is a cautious approach, especially if there a bugs that were not found in testing. Early adoption is not always the safe way.

Next is the fact that nothing in Thunderbird requires Windows to reboot. But having "custom" locations for files and data can be an issue. Especially if the location is synced to somewhere else like a NAS or the cloud.

But this was a success with the same issue

Thanks for your answer. Yes . .I actually DO maintain TBird on my workstsation on a different drive than the main C drive (the laptop just has a single SSD). My workstation has two drives -- the main SSD ("C") holding the OS and programs .. and a higher capacity (1 TB) HD ("D") that I use to hold all my data -- including the Thunderbird profile and all my email. It could also be that I'm seeing the effects of the staged release .. because both my machines (laptop and workstation) are on the update channel. Thus the HP laptop was part of the 5% while my workstation was not. OK. So your response has definitely answered one issue (why my workstation isn't on 91) and I will explore the links you sent to see what I can do about the other problem (reboot issue). Hopefully I'll find a solution there .. and stop being annoyed. FYI -- I run MalwareBytes Premium on both machines complemented by Windows Security.
