Have removed the language pack as suggested and can restart normally & use TB OK. I'll mark as solved - many thanks for help: I would not have got there without it. I'll make another contribution to the TB cause online :-) Cheers, Neil

Hi christ1

Thanks for response. I’m unable to run Thunderbird, but have the text from the ‘Mozilla Crash Reporter’ (MCR) as it crashes on start-up, the attached screendump also shows this. I have had many over last day, just the odd one before. I have recently updated my PC so it’s up to date, and don’t use any antivirus software other than that within Windows. I have been forced to use the default Windows mail software which I’m using here: I’d rather use Thunderbird (I’ve contributed a few times over the years!) but this is just not an option at present...

If you need further info etc just let me know.

Best wishes, Neil Text from MCR as above:-

Remove any language packs (not dictionaries) from Tools/Add-ons & Themes, Languages, restart TB, and see if the crashes persist. Language packs are a known issue with TB 91.

Thanks for above. Have tried a few times but haven't been able to complete. When I try to start TB it fires up VERY slowly [I've just got a new PC - the old one was v old & slow, but current PC does everything else speedily]. I can see, within TB, windows with dictionaries and this could be the issue as you suggest.

I can try to access Tools/Add-ons & Themes, Languages, but it slows & crashes as I try to find the language pack removal bit. I'll keep trying over coming days, but if you've any other suggestions I'd be grateful to hear...

I'm not a very skilled PC user, but have got to know & enjoyed TB and would like to continue as stated above.

more options

Thanks for above - I can now access my mails via TB. I did use the Dictionary facility & would like to again, but it's great to be able to access my emails again. Not sure whether to leave this open in hope issues mentioned above ("Language packs are a known issue with TB 91"). I'm grateful for support to date, Neil

more options

If you have removed the language pack, TB should now work in normal mode, and dictionaries can be added (they are separate from language packs). Add dictionaries from Preferences/Composition/Spelling, Download more dictionaries.

more options

Ah - I hadn't realised the distinction of Language packs & dictionaries. I had a go at removing the language pack & get warning "Remove English (GB) Language Pack as well as its configuration and data from Thunderbird?" Just wondering the ramifications of this. Sorry to be a numpty, and thanks again for help to date, Neil

more options

Removing a language pack simply means the menus and commands will revert to the language of the installed version, without the ability to easily switch to the language of the pack. If you have the EN-GB version installed, there's no point in having the EN-GB language pack, but if you had the FR or NL version installed, and sometimes wanted to switch to EN-GB menus, the language pack would be useful. Dictionaries for spellcheck are entirely separate and you can install as many dictionaries as you like in any language version.

more options

removing packs is fine. The warning about config and data information is just a boilerplate warning for all add-on removals. (some add-ons do in fact have data)
