Newsgroups no longer working since Thunderbird 102. Waiting for 102.1.1
Since upgrading to Thunderbird 102, I can no longer see nor download any new posts to NNTP newsgroups. When I try to get messages, there is a "flash" giving some number of messages, but they never download. It also seems that any posts I try to make aren't made.

Well, it appears that TB 102.3.1 solved the problem, though the release notes didn't mention that. I waited a few weeks to see if it came back, but it hasn't, and updates (I am now on 102.4) have not regressed. So I will mark this problem as solved. Thanks to all who responded.

Update. The post I made did, in fact, go through. It's just that i didn't see it, as I don't see any new posts from anyone. But looking with another newsreader (Xananews) it is there. BTW, I don't think it matters, but this is on Windows 11 Home.
Further update. When I first start TB, newsgroups work fine. But after a while, no new posts show up. If I then click on the newsgroup name, if there are new messages, I get a flash showing the number of messages, but the flash disappears, and the messages don't download. If I then exit and then restart TB, the messages download fine. Everything works for a while, but then the problem repeats. Sending seems to work fine, though if I am in the "no receive" condition, I don't see the post.
I haven't determined any pattern as to what "a while" is. :-(
Since upgrading to Thunderbird 102
What version exactly?
I first noticed it when I upgraded to 102, but it has persisted through every version I have run since, including my currently installed 102.1.0 (32 bit)
This sounds like a known problem. If so, then this has been fixed in beta already, but the fix hasn't made it into v102 yet. It will likely land in v102.1.1, so it won't take very long anymore. For the time being you can either remove the primary password or flip the pref mailnews.nntp.jsmodule to false.
Thank you very much for your quick response. Given that it seems the fix will be out "real soon now", and I recognize when the problem happens, and the fix is pretty easy, I think I will wait a while rather than mucking around with your other suggested fixes.
When 102.1.1 comes out, I will see if it is fixed, and if not will try your other suggestions. If any of all that fixes the problem, I will mark it solved.
Thanks again.
TB 102.1.1 is out now.
I upgraded to 102.1.1 on Saturday, and it seemed to go OK. Reading the release notes, I was hopeful, as it described the problem and said it was fixed. As I indicated, the problem seems to take a while to show up, so I waited, Unfortunately, the same problem, or at least a problem with the same symptoms just happened again. :-(
I upgraded this morning to v102.1.2 and the problem still exists. Trying to retrieve the newsgroup list, all I get is the message to "Please wait" and a progress bar, but no sign of the newsgroups. This worked perfectly with v96.1, but the problem started with v102 and subsequent versions. I do hope this will be fixed soon.
Yes, there are still issues with newsgroups in the new version. Some fixes should happen in the coming weeks.
I understand that several of the bugs in this version have been fixed in a version 102.1.3 but I have failed to find a download of the revised version. I am looking for a portable version of Thunderbird v102.1.3. Please can anyone point me in he direction of a download?
There is no version 102.1.3 (yet). You can always get the latest version from https://www.thunderbird.net/ The portable version is a 3rd-party product, so you'd have to get in touch with portableapps.com.
Newsgroups work for me (currently 102.2.2, 64 bit, on Windows 10 Home). . .BUT recently (probably since 102) sort by Subject (unthreaded) doesn't understand that it ought to ignore leading "Re: " when alphabetizing. All the replies are grouped with other subjects beginning with R, rather than following the original post.
This ONLY happens for newsgroups; mail folders (including inbox) still sort properly. Is this already a known problem?
Unfortunately, the same problem, or at least a problem with the same symptoms just happened again. :-(
I have nor more ideas about your problem. You may try with a new profile. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/using-multiple-profiles
Start Thunderbird with the new profile, create the news account, and subscribe to your newsgroups. Do you still see the problem?

eades1936,
try to press the 'Refresh' button in the subscription dialog. If this doesn't fix it please start a new topic for your problem. https://support.mozilla.org/questions/new

Quick update. I upgraded to 102.2.2 soon after seeing that it was available. Though the release notes didn't mention any fixes to my problem, it appeared for several days that it was fixed. But alas, it returned with exactly the same symptoms as before. It works fine for a while, but then seem to no longer download new posts. If I click on the newsgroup name, it will briefly "flash" a number, which then disappears. But if I exit then restart Thunderbird, it automatically downloads that number of posts, and the cycle repeats.

Alas, the problem is NOT solved in TB 102.4.0 here. Nothing changed since the problem occurred in the first 102 versions.

Best to post in a new topic with more detail.
