purple box appears in upper left corner of Firefox. It seems to contain a to do list of some sort all with an x through them as though they have been completed it disappears only to re-appear later.

Do you have that problem when running in the Firefox SafeMode?

Don't select anything right now, just use "Continue in SafeMode."
