why can't I set Firefox privacy to "never remember history" as my default? I click it but everytime I close FF and reopen it, I check my privacy setting and it's back to "custom".

"Never remember history" makes Firefox switch to permanent Private Browsing - Use Firefox without saving history mode ("Automatically start Firefox in a private browsing session" gets a check mark). That is the only change.

You see "Use custom settings for history" if you have made changes to other settings in the History section. "Remember history" and "Never remember history" only stay selected if all history settings are the default. If not then it switches to "Use custom settings ..." to indicate that.

Be aware that running Firefox in Private Browsing mode can make some features not to work or work differently.
