Hello,

I would like to clear the description field of all my bookmarks. To do this manually would be horrible. Is there some tool that can do it? Or is there some trick to edit the sqlite file?

Also I'd be interested how I can stop Firefox from filling the description field when adding a new bookmark.

Thank you in advance

Same poster asked same question and received answer on the Mozillazine forum: http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?f=38&t=2057513

The information submitted with your question indicates that you have out of date plugins with known security and stability issues that should be updated. To see the plugins submitted with your question, click "More system details..." to the right of your original question post.

  • Adobe Shockwave for Director Netscape plug-in, version 11.5
  1. Check your plugin versions: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/plugincheck/
    • Note: plugin check page does not have information on all plugin versions
  2. Update Shockwave for Director
    • NOTE: this is not the same as Shockwave Flash; this installs the Shockwave Player.
    • Use Firefox to download and SAVE the installer to your hard drive from the link in the article below (Desktop is a good place so you can find it).
    • When the download is complete, exit Firefox (File > Exit)
    • locate and double-click in the installer you just downloaded, let the install complete.
    • Restart Firefox and check your plugins again.

Thank you. Will update Shockwave right away. And yes, I also asked the question in Mozillazine. However, it seems there is not solution to this :-(

A way to avoid adding the description is to drag the favicon on the left side of the location bar to the Bookmarks menu or side bar to create the bookmark.

With a proper query you can probably use the SQLite Manager extension on the file places.sqlite

Well, actually, your question was about clearing the Description field and you indicated in the Mozillazine forum that you were able to accomplish that with your existing Bookmarks.

You then added, in the Mozillazine forum, the caveat that all new bookmarks were being automatically completed with an entry in the Description field, something that you did not specify in your original question.

Try cor-el's suggestion. I have never experienced that second issue, regardless of the method used to save a Bookmark. Are you sure that some Add-on is not automatically filling in the Description field?

I had missed the above posts by the two of you, so my excuses for any confusion.

If a website offers a description (<meta name="description" content="" />) then that description is automatically added if you click the star or use Bookmark This Page.

cor-el:

Would that be when bookmarking using a "Bookmark this site" link/button on a web page rather than from right-click context menu?

I assume that it will happen with every method used to create a bookmark except the dragging method that I mentioned above. I haven't checked that though.
