When I begin using a given web page FF asks if i want to save the user name and password. I select yes and they are saved in tools options passwords but most do not work on a second opening of the page. E Bay is the only one that works.

I have removed all several times and am again asked if I want to save the UN & PW but again they do not work.

However when I type the first letter of my UN it suggests the complete name and fills in the password. So I know the information is stored it is just not supplying it as expected.

There is a difference between remembering the name and password in the Password Manager and a "remember me" check box on a web page.
The latter usually involves the creation of a special "remember me" cookie that is stored on your computer and that is send to the server.
If that "remember me" cookie is removed or gets corrupted or is not send to the server then the server won't remember you and you need to sign in once again.

Websites remembering you and automatically log you in is stored in a cookie.

  • Create an allow cookie exception (Tools > Options > Privacy > Cookies: Exceptions) to keep such a cookie, especially for secure websites and if cookies expire when Firefox is closed.

Make sure that you do not run Firefox in Private Browsing mode.

Clearing "Site Preferences" clears all exceptions for cookies, images, pop-up windows, software installation, and passwords.

A very interesting comment. I normally block most cookies manually as the request to set them appears. I reviewed the ALLOWED COOKIES and only found one relating to one of the sites in question. Allowed it and now that site opens directly.

Another interesting point is that E Bay and one Forum I frequent now open directly without having their UN $ PW saved in tools.

Will post again after a longer trial.
