I am periodically prompted to upgrade to 5.01, but when I try, the progress bar never gets past "connecting to server", finally ending in a "Failed" message. If I go to "About Firefox", it only directs me to the Mozilla site, but after navigating there, there is no ability to or indication that there is an upgrade. The prompts to upgrade Firefox only occur occasionally. Quitting and restarting it, will not produce an new prompt.

You could download the whole installer and install it manually.

I assume if I did that, I would have a fair amount of resetting up of plugins, bookmark folders, etc. I would prefer to avoid all that.

No, installing a new version does not affect the profile any more than upating does.

Thanks. I'm glad to find that out. I'll give it go Monday when I return to my office.
