Firefox 7.0 crashes on startup (including in safe mode) as a standard user in Windows XP SP3, even after clean installation

Hi all,

I need some help. FF 7.0 crashes at startup / launch every time, including in Windows XP safe mode.

I initially upgraded to FF version 7.0 from the latest version 6 release automatically. This automatic installation crashed, so I downloaded v7.0 again.

I uninstalled my existing FF6 installation, including personal settings, and ran v7.0 installation. It appeared to install successfully, but crashes at launch. I have repeated this process many times with OS reboots without success.

I also ran FF in Windows XP Safe Mode, but experienced the same crash at application launch. FF will now only display the 'Crash Reporter'.

For background:

  • I'm running WinXP Pro SP3 on a corporate machine.
  • The machine is running Tivoli Access Manager (but I choose not to use it)
  • I've run an AVG Free anti-virus scan with no results.
  • I ran a MalwareBytes Anti Malware scan. One infection was found (since rectified) as follows:

Registry Data Items Infected: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows NT\SystemRestore\DisableConfig (Windows.Tool.Disabled)

Please let me know if you need more info.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

If you shut down Tivoli completely, does FF 7 launch? Tivoli is based on the same code as Passlogix v-GO. If it is running (even paused) it will cause a conflict. The Mozilla helper object is causing the conflict.

I'm curious to know if the reg key setttings are the same as the related post above

The reg key posted is probably set from your corporate domain via GPO preventing you from configuring system restore settings. Most likely not an 'infection' but MalwareBytes might pick it up as a false positve.

I followed the same workaround you proposed. Despite being on Win XP SP3, it worked perfectly. FF7 now starts normally as expected.

For the benefit of others experiencing this issue, I've pasted the fix below.

Workaround for users using Tivoli Access Manager on WinXP SP3:

Note: This removes SSO support for Firefox by editing the registry. Try this workaround at your own risk. Back-up before editing the registry.

Steps:

  1. Start > Run > regedit
  2. In the Registry Editor, navigate to: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Passlogix\Extensions\AccessManager\StartupApps]
  3. Remove the line starting "MozHOPath".
  4. Restart v-GO SSO or reboot computer.

Thanks to MikeBY for the assistance.

For those not wishing to do a registry edit, or wait for a fix from Oracle, note that firefox 3.6.23 is still supported, and downgrading to that has been confirmed also to be a workaround for this type of problem see /questions/880780

Unfortunately, this continues to be a bug in FF8.0 as well. Looking forward to a resolution. I'm using Chrome in the meantime and missing FF!

There appears to be an active bug for Firerox 8 and 9 that both Firefox and Tivoli developers are aware of, lets hope it gets sorted out, presumably the problem now also hits Firefox 10 ?

I have the same problem, but find my way around it without going into the registry data. See my post here [278606] .

I hope this helps.

Thanks, You can also go into Add/Remove programs select the Oracle SSO software and 'Modify' the installation. In the installer, remove the browser support for Mozilla. This is 'clean' as you are letting the software installer remove the support instead of hacking the registry or manually deleting files that could cause trouble later when trying to get things working again at some future date.

Fix form Oracle (ESSO-LM 11.1.1.5.1), see https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=680927#c58

I note the bug comment linked by MikeBY Oxylatium is suggesting that updating the Tivol software is the preferred fix.

I also note the bug is asking anyone who experiences the problem to confirm whether or not the upgrade does work in fixing the problem on their System.
