Save image doesn't remember last location saved for Firefox 7
This only started happening with Firefox 7, all previous version worked fine. When using "Save Image", Firefox will not remember the most recent location in which images were saved. It will instead randomly choose prior locations in which images were saved. When saving images, I save them in different folders to sort them properly, but firefox never remembers the most recent one used. This is INCREDIBLY ANNOYING because if I want to saving a group of images in a common folder, it constantly forces me to navigate to that folder instead of remembering the location of that folder from the last image saved there.

May I suggest anyone considering Firefox 6 from an unofficial site reads my comment /questions/887248#answer-269092 as there are safer alternatives.

It's not an unofficial site. The links on that page point to ftp.mozilla.org.
However, I did find the 6.02 releases here:
ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/6.0.2/
Here are some US English specific links. For anything else, go into the link above.

Update: I anticipate a bug may be filed by Firefox support management, to properly sort out this behavior.
It's a bug due to an added "feature". It's being worked on.
Thunderbird is also afflicted with this bug. Started with 7.0 just like Firefox.
I can shed a bit of light on why this is a disaster.
First of all, people surf the web, they change web pages constantly. What complete idiot decided we need to designate a save location for all these pages - to be reset every time you restart Firefox?
So in FF 3.6, I surfed and saved images, always to the same location. Occasionally I downloaded a video or a folder, these all went to the Download Folder identified in Tools - Options. Perfect!
Now, with FF8, I have to keep an eye on which folder this junk goes to. The best workaround I've found is to save all images to the Download Folder. But here's another suggestion as to why the new system is a humongous waste of time (and clicks, in case you have already developed Repetitive Stress Syndrome (which you will)). I like to do Google image searches. Sometimes you can drag an image, but sometimes you have to upload it. Under 3.6, Google was always remembered the location of my image folder. Now, it NEVER goes directly to my image folder, even when it is the Download Folder.
If something ain't broke, don't fix it.
A bit more information. I just dropped back to 3.6 and still noted some of the problems. Turns out I was having all my success with Firefox 3.5.7. Reinstalled it without a problem (lost the cookies, but I had them backed up.) Now all is right. The computer remembers where everything is.
By the way, I liked the 8.0 interface, but in no way was it worth having to navigate to the folder I wanted several times a day. Safe Browsing All.
I've been thinking about this problem ever since I posted on it. There is absolutely no way I will ever upgrade my Firefox beyond 3.5.7 as long as this ridiculous bug exists. No way. At some point I'll go back to Internet Explorer if I have to.
One other note to add. If you like browsing and saving images, Google image search is one of the greatest things going. It is invaluable. Quite often, you cannot drag an image into the search box. When that happens, you have to save the image, then click on Google's "upload" image option. Unfortunately, this Firefox bug affects Google's ability to find your save directory, so that you have to go through the "browse" tree and pop more advil to offset your RSS inflamation thanks to the extra forty percent of clicks necessary to use Firefox.
On version 9.0.1 and this problem is STILL occurring. What on earth is going on with R&D? Is this problem really that hard to fix? How many updates have come and gone and this problem is still plaguing users? I'm getting bloody well tired of having to go search for files that ended up in some unknown directory because this P.O.S. can't remember the last folder I downloaded to. Someone need to get off their fat backside and GET THIS FIXED. NOW!
Just noticed on my desktop computer, which runs XP, that 3.6.3 works like it should. I know when I tried 3.6 on my Windows 7 laptop the problem occurred. I wouldn't be surprised to find out the Windows 7 is screwing up the works.
Just thought I would add a cautionary note.
Please remember that Firefox 3.6 is the earliest version that is still supported. Because it is still supported security upgrades continue to be available so if you do use it please keep it up-to date, I am in a linux 3.6.24 version at the moment, the standard releases for Windows may be even more recent .25 or .26?)
I have not really been following this issue, other than to learn that it was mainly an intentional change. I would however add there is little point in requesting developer attention here, they are unlikely to see the support forum. There are plans to report feedback from the forum but that may be a while before anything is implemented.
This is an infuriating problem, as you all know. I research a lot on the Web, and now any image, file, or Web page I download is sent to the last folder I downloaded to from that site, which has absolutely nothing to do with the project I'm saving to at present. All I want is to have the "Save as" default folder be what ever folder I last saved a download to irregardless of what site I am on. Having Firefox suddenly change my download folder to another folder on another drive in another partition based on what server I last saved from is frustrating. Is there any way to change a setting in about:config that will resolve this problem?
I save lots of images. I can't stand the random target folder -- I now have images in the wrong folders all over. This is intolerable and completely unacceptable. I've used Firefox for years and can't believe this change hasn't immediately been removed. You have the old code -- put it back TODAY and issue a revision.
I just loaded CHROME -- it saves images properly! Good bye Firefox!
Sorta late to the party, but I'm having the same problem... Thought it was Windows XP, but after some Googling, I realized it was Firefox related...
Not switching to Chrome or IE, but I sure would like it if Mozilla would fix this obviously long-standing problem...
bmwracer — the issue has been resolved with the release of Firefox 11.0. However, if you have updated FF to that release and are still having the problem, you may need to add a line into your ABOUT:CONFIG file. Are you familiar with editing that file? You will need to add this line into the file, or modify it if it exists:
browser.download.lastDir.savePerSite user set boolean false
That will tell Firefox NOT to save the download directories on a per site basis, but will allow Firefox to save the last directory you downloaded to independent of what site or what type of file.
It appears that it did the trick... Thanks!
BTW, I am running FF 11.0... Don't know why it didn't fix the problem.
Thank you very much Spurred_On Adding the preference you provided to the prefs.js file did the trick. I can now save images with Firefox once again and they go into the proper folder! I couldn't get about:config to add a new preference so I manually edited the prefs.js file even though you're not supposed to do it that way. That was easy and seems to work just fine -- only had to make sure Firefox was not running when I edited the file. Best of all, I can now once again use a plug-in called Download Helper to automatically save multiple images which I really like. This plug-in only works with Firefox so I was missing it while using Chrome.
